CHAPTER 12

MUKARA RIVER BASIN

NIGERIA

Four days after the meeting with the generals, and in the dead of night, the Corporate Solutions Mi-17 Assault Helo they dubbed Tokoloshe hovered over the jungle preparing to flare into the small clearing. We were nine kilometers west of the first of three combat outposts for Mukara Village.

Watching from the infrared scanners in the cockpit of the helo, the wreckage of blasted Nigerian Army vehicles littering the landscape near the only road heading east spilled out beneath us.

The South African pilot for Corporate Solutions, Warner Vorhees, lowered us to the clearing and the crew chief opened the clamshell rear doors.

Eighteen of us unassed the aircraft. Most of us pulled crates and cases into the clearing. As soon as we were clear, the clamshell doors closed, the helo spun in place, and Tokoloshe took off heading west.

Nine kilometers may seem like a long distance, but I was willing to bet the first combat outpost heard our engines. At the last minute, I decided to go with King on the recon, wanting to get eyes on the battlespace and village myself.

The first thing we did after the helo left was get off the X. Two Corporate Solutions contractors took point and moved us to another small clearing approximately one and half kilometers north of our landing zone.

We spent the next half hour setting up our equipment while my contingent of South African contractors, under the command of Cannibal Caine, conducted a perimeter sweep and set up Mini MS-803 mines as booby traps. These mines were almost identical to US military claymore anti-personnel devices.

Aaron Cannibal Caine had reached the point of dangerous infuriation for being kept out of the action. Caine may be getting old, but he is an awesome warrior and combat leader. Every once and a while, you have to throw him a bone.

In the few days since the meeting, the Nigerian Armed Forces were already converting a small clearing eighty kilometers to our south into a forward operating base. My partner, Billy Black, assembled a team of Cobra veterans and was integrating them with the same company of Nigerian infantry we used before during the battle to recover the crew of the Calabar Royal.

Meanwhile in the clearing, our reconnaissance mission was breaking up into three teams.

Teresa T. Torres led Bravo 201—our overwatch element—which consisted of her, Nakeisha Powers, Meredith Kendricks, and Mike Powell to set up the SATCOM relay and assist with drone deployment. Their job was to provide intelligence for the recon element.

The recon element consisted of members of Task Force Cobra who attended the Jungle Warfare Course centuries ago back when we were all in the legit military. There weren’t many of us.

The team consisted of me, King David, Jamal Washington, and my two SEAL combat swimmers, Chad Seals and Scotty Anderson. I brought the SEALs along in case we reached the Mukara River. I had a mission for them which required a night swim. They were not happy about it.

I also asked Wickers earlier if he had any men trained in jungle reconnaissance.
